When you’re tweeting out links to pertinent industry news or opinion pieces, should you 100% agree with everything contained in the article? Or is it OK to present information that might actually differ with the way you think? If you do tweet something like that out, are your followers apt to get confused, thinking that you believe one thing when you really believe another?
Listen to my mini-podcast here and let me know what you think. My take is that it’s OK to tweet out interesting tidbits even if you don’t 100% agree with the contents. You might even post a little endcap on the tweet that says “I don’t completely agree with this, but what do you guys think?”
Leave a comment and give me your take!
I recorded this podcast in my local Panera Bread Company – forgive my daughter talking to herself in the background!
Hmm. I believe that you should promote links and articles that are beneficial to your audience or create a dialog. I don't believe you have to necessarily agree with the items you retweet or promote. A lot of times when I RT, I will add to the tweet, do you agree or disagree with…..
Chris, in this case, I think it comes down to providing some additional context. As the one passing the information on, it becomes your job to share your perspective on the topic.
If you have a horse in the race it really begins to matter if the information you are sharing is a “disconnect” when viewed against your traditional comments on things. You have people that know you well and most of them will hopefully see how your ramblings fit together over time. But, what if the “brands don’t matter” tweet was the first posting someone saw from you? I think putting things in the right context could help avoid any confusion.
A little endcap on your tweet of “I don’t completely agree with this, but what do you guys think?” will help, but who interprets what you are cool with and where you differ without some specifics? Providing this right content is really hard to do within 140 characters. That is why you have such an awesome blog…so you can share your stellar ideas with others who want to dig deeper.
I think there is a certain amount of endorsement that comes along with a Retweet —- but that's unfortunate — Twitter doesn't have enough characters to really offer much additional context as jonfalk mentions below… I guess the best thing to do is drop a comment on the post leaving your take.
it certainly does not dilute or damage your brand value because you have different view. I fell this brings out of the crowd and makes you special but it takes time to be counted.
