Happywork is an avant-garde fable about all the absolutely worst companies you could ever imagine rolled into one. Believe me, if you have an issue with your workplace, it’s in here. But as you may have guessed from the title, this is an upbeat book. Chris Reimer does a fabulous job of laying out the principles for making work a decent — nay, a great — place to be.”

Happywork by Chris Reimer

Since entering the business world in 1995, I have been concerned by the way humans interact at work. Frankly, I’m really worried that we mistreat each other just about every place we hang out: at home, on the subway, online, at school, and at work. However, our struggle to be civil and happy at work especially interests me. Over 70% of people are unhappy with their jobs? We need to be happier at work!

In my new book Happywork, I posit the theory that nothing is more important at work than our happiness. It’s not usually the first thing brilliant business strategists teach, but I hope to change their minds. I tell the story of a dying business, Vunorri Inc., and the talented consultant hired to save it. He’s never failed before, but he finds Vunorri and its hateful, scheming employees too much to handle. The lessons he learns change his outlook forever.

Each of us starts a new job with such hope. So much happiness … the “Honeymoon Period” is a joyful time. However, we then encounter people different than us, and we throw up our defenses (or we get offensive). We encounter politics, work cliques, favoritism, head games, mean people, and apathy. None of this crap has anything to do with success – we’re competing with each other to keep our jobs, instead of cooperating. We feel stress, followed by sadness, low productivity, burnout, and finally … worthlessness.

All the while, we’re expected to commute home Monday through Friday and be great parents and spouses? Stressed to the limit at work, spending overtime away from our families, and we’re supposed to raise the next great generation of human beings?

Guys, our lives are short – too short to be torn apart by jobs we hate. Our companies deserve better. Our families deserve better. We can do better.

WHAT WILL YOU GET OUT OF MY BOOK?

1. PERSPECTIVE – Learn to strategically (and empathetically) think and see things from others’ point of view. See your work for what it is – a HUGE part of your life, but only one part of it. Learn to make work fit into your life’s “user experience.” To successfully execute on tactics, you need to be in the right mindset – one in which you value your own happiness. My goal is to change your mind about work.

2. IDEAS – Once you’re in the right mindset, what next? Time to start making real changes at work. The dysfunctional company in my story is repaired and changed forever by The Happywork Agreement, a work code of conduct containing 46 big ideas that:

  • Will provide you effective team-building maxims
  • Improve employee morale
  • Institute human relations best practices for the workplace
  • Squash office worst practices that breed malaise and unnecessary conflict
  • Create an office environment where happiness can take root

3. COURAGE – Make big changes at your place at work, or muster the courage to get out of an abusive work relationship. Draw a line in the sand and say, “No more office jerks!”

REVIEWS FROM GREAT THINKERS AND FRIENDS

Happywork is an avant-garde fable about all the absolutely worst companies you could ever imagine rolled into one. Believe me, if you have an issue with your workplace, it’s in here. MARK SCHAEFER, author of Return on Influence

“I’m genuinely impressed by a book that can keep my attention for more than 30 minute chunks, takes me little time to read (because it captures my attention and/or it’s just an easy read) and gives me ideas for my own writing, be it for work or pleasure. This did all three in spades. I’m seldom engaged by fiction unless it’s chock full of fart jokes and soft core porn. This was an excellent exception. ;-).”
JASON FALLS, co-author of No Bullshit Social Media

Happywork will resonate with everyone from CEOs to Human Resources to anyone who has ever worked in a cubicle or an office. More importantly, perhaps, because most of us have, at one time or another, worked in at least one company where we’ve felt maligned and mistreated, this book will confirm that you were right all along about how work life should be. And for the ‘higher ups,’ this book will show you exactly how a better work life makes for a better bottom line.”
SUSAN BARONCINI-MOE, executive coach, digital marketing strategist, and author of Business in Blue Jeans

Happywork is a shockingly realistic look at the common workplace and a blunt reminder that employment misery is unacceptable. Life is too short! It’s time for a change, and this book will get you started.”
JASON ZOOK, author of Creativity for Sale

“Remember Harvey Keitel’s character in Pulp Fiction? He played “The Wolf” – he was the guy they brought in to clean up the mess. Sam Maslow is that guy in Happywork. Dick Vunorri has hired the ideal person to transform his company. The journey Reimer takes us on is cringe-worthy, suspenseful, entertaining, and educational. A wonderful read!.”
